“I felt helpless. No power, no friends.”
Any parent who has ever worried over their child’s health can empathize with Snoop Dogg’s anguish when his young daughter Cori began exhibiting troubling symptoms. Snoop (né Cordozar Calvin Broadus) and his wife, Shanté, recently shared their story with People magazine.
When Cori was only 6, her parents noticed a light spot on their daughter’s face. Then her hair began falling out, and she was losing weight.
Seeking answers, the worried parents eventually found their diagnosis - lupus.
via MedBroadcast: Lupus, also called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects the skin and joints. It can also involve other organs such as the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. Lupus is an unpredictable lifelong condition that typically affects young adults between 18 and 40 years of age. Between 70% and 90% of those affected are women.
Cori’s lupus was detected young, but in fact, according to Lupus LA, about 1 in 5 people with lupus develop the disease within the first two decades of life.
While it took time to find the type of treatment that worked for her, Cori is now 11 and doing well. She and her family are now involved with Lupus LA, an organization through which the Broadus family helps to raise awareness and to receive the emotional support of other families dealing with the disease.
